Earlier, the DRC announced a tender to find an organization to help the regulator establish monitoring and response units aimed at identifying possible cryptocurrency mining operations in the region. A week later the regulator announced the winner — the local company Inner Mongolia Mengze Engineering Management Limited. The contract value was $46,000.
According to The Block, the DRC tender specified specific areas in which the regulator seeks more information. Among others, these include:
- the processes involved in producing and developing cryptocurrency mining operations;
- expenditures, revenues, taxation, and electricity consumption related to mining operations;
- the physical distribution of mining facilities;
- methods for identifying mining operations among other activities that rely on big data and cloud computing;
- analysis of the primary hardware used for mining;
- the impact of mining bans on achieving carbon-neutrality goals.
In May, Vice Premier Liu He announced forthcoming measures in relation to mining and the trading of Bitcoin. In the same month, the state news agency Xinhua criticised cryptocurrency mining.
Subsequent prohibitory measures against the digital currency mining industry were taken by the authorities of the provinces Qinghai, Xinjiang, Sichuan, Yunnan and Inner Mongolia.
The bans led to a mass exodus of industry participants from China. However, according to CCAF, the country lost its dominance in Bitcoin mining as early as March.
In September, the Hebei provincial administration in China adopted a series of special measures to combat illegal cryptocurrency mining.
