Interpol launches its own metaverse
The International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) unveiled a metaverse at the 90th session of the General Assembly in New Delhi представила метавселенную, designed specifically for law enforcement around the world.
“The INTERPOL Metaverse, fully operational, allows registered users to take a virtual tour of Interpol’s General Secretariat headquarters in Lyon, interact with officials via their avatars, and even undertake immersive training courses in forensics and other aspects of law enforcement,” the statement said.
The organisation also established an Expert Group on the Metaverse.
Interpol believes that growth in the number of users of virtual worlds will be accompanied by an increase in crimes within them. Among the possible threats cited by the organisation are data theft, money laundering, financial fraud, counterfeiting, extortion, phishing, sexual misconduct and harassment.
“For law enforcement purposes, some of these threats are likely to pose significant challenges, as not all acts criminalised in the physical world are considered crimes in virtual space,” the organisation’s experts warned.
On the other hand, the metaverse offers law enforcement a range of benefits, including remote work, networked collaboration, collection and preservation of evidence, and training, Interpol says.
“For many metaverses, they seem like an abstract future, but the rise in problems within them is what motivates Interpol: to support our member countries in fighting crime and in making a world, virtual or not, safer for those who inhabit it,” said the organisation’s Secretary General, Jürgen Stock.
During the General Assembly session, participants were able to test a virtual journey of their avatars through Interpol’s Lyon office.
In October, the organization created a unit to assist member countries in combating crypto-crime.
