Investigative Committee: cryptocurrency used to pay for contract killings

Criminals use cryptocurrency to pay for contract killings, said Konstantin Komarda, head of the department for cybercrime investigations and high-tech crimes at the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation, in an interview with TASS.

According to him, to convert cryptocurrencies into fiat, criminals use hundreds of electronic wallets registered under third-party individuals.

“Transactions are processed through 15–20 electronic wallets, where they are carefully obfuscated among tens of thousands of other operations before reaching the ultimate recipient,” he said.

Komarda also noted a significant rise in cybercrime. In his words, one in seven crimes in Russia is committed with the help of technology or in cyberspace.

Earlier, FSB head Alexander Bortnikov said that cryptocurrencies are often used to finance their activities by terrorists.
