IOHK Proposes Solution to Protect Ethereum Classic From 51% Attacks

IOHK, the developer of the Cardano cryptocurrency, proposed to introduce checkpoints in every third block of the Ethereum Classic network to shield it from 51% attacks.

The protocol, named Ouroboros Byzantine Fault Tolerant (OBFT), would permit the network to reject blocks produced by attackers.

It is envisaged that the checkpoints would be verified by specially trusted nodes. These could include the Cardano blockchain as well as the Bitcoin blockchain.

The size of the trusted-node network remains to be determined, as it will influence the time required to reach consensus.

Earlier in August, the Ethereum Classic network faced three 51% attacks. The last time, the depth of the reorganisation stood at 7000 blocks, which is equivalent to roughly two days of mining.

Later, ETC developers said that to protect the network they intend to enlist regulators and impose strict oversight over platforms renting hashing power.
