Iranian Accounts Banned for Influence Operation Using ChatGPT

OpenAI removed a group of Iranian accounts for using ChatGPT to create content aimed at influencing the U.S. presidential elections and other topics.

According to the company, the material generated as part of Operation Storm-2035 was distributed on social media and websites. OpenAI noted that it did not achieve significant audience engagement, with the content receiving few likes, reposts, and comments.

The topics covered included the conflict in the Gaza Strip, Israel’s presence at the Olympic Games, the U.S. presidential elections, politics in Venezuela, the rights of Latino communities in America, and Scottish independence.

The operation involved creating long articles for publication on five websites and short comments for posting on social media.

OpenAI shared internal information with the government, companies, and industry stakeholders.

Earlier, U.S. senators sent a letter to OpenAI, urging the startup to provide information about its efforts to create safe and reliable artificial intelligence.

In June, OpenAI announced the appointment of retired U.S. Army General Paul Nakasone to its board of directors and the OpenAI Security and Safety Committee. Former NSA and CIA employee Edward Snowden criticized this decision.
