Irish police are investigating a fraudulent scheme to lure investments in cryptocurrencies from wealthy individuals. The Irish Times reports.

One of the banks expressed concern when an elderly client attempted to execute a series of transactions worth around €500,000 each ($586,500). Prior to this, his account had been inactive for several years.

Law enforcement warned the pensioner about the risk of losing his money, but initially he insisted on carrying out his plans. In the end, police with the bank’s assistance managed to block another planned transfer of around €500,000.

The force said that several victims had collectively transferred several million euros to Bitcoin wallets controlled by the attackers. The total loss could rise, as not all victims have been identified.

Some of the perpetrators are foreign nationals. After a series of searches at properties they own in south Dublin, police seized cash, jewellery and computers.

Some of the money is believed to have been moved out of the country. Irish authorities continue the investigation with the aid of foreign colleagues.
