The Israeli army became the first in the world to use an AI-guided drone swarm in real combat in the Gaza Strip conflict. NewScientist reports.
“The drone swarm was used in the combat zone from which numerous rocket launches toward Israel were carried out. To our knowledge, this is the first worldwide instance of using this kind of weapon,” the military said.
They added that the drones’ main objective is to detect, identify, and attack Hamas militants.
Experts noted that each drone requires an operator. This time, specialists linked multiple drones into a single network controlled by AI, with a human issuing commands and directing the squadron’s actions.
According to the military, the AI also allowed the drones to continue fighting even if part of the swarm was destroyed by the enemy, something no one had managed before.
Earlier in May, Israeli forces said that used artificial intelligence and supercomputers in the 11-day Gaza conflict.
The UN recorded the world’s first instance of a combat drone attack on a person without a direct order from the operator.
