Jack Dorsey Joins Bluesky PBLLC Board of Directors

The Bluesky project to develop an open, decentralised standard for social networks announced the creation of an independent Bluesky PBLLC. Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey joined the board of directors.

It’s been a long time coming, but the Bluesky PBLLC is now an independent organization formed to implement our vision! Stay tuned for updates. https://t.co/Qb6CE0JBPw

“Our mission is in the development and promotion of broad-scale adoption of technologies for open and decentralised public communication,” the statement said.

Besides Dorsey, the board also includes Jabber/XMPP technology founder Jeremy Miller and Bluesky CEO Jay Graber.

“We are building an open ecosystem of social networks in which developers will have more opportunities to create and deploy innovations, and users will have more choice and control over the services they use,” emphasised Bluesky.

In 2019, Dorsey announced Bluesky, an initiative aimed at decentralising social networks and funded by Twitter. He said the development of the standard could take years.

Twitter is funding a small independent team of up to five open source architects, engineers, and designers to develop an open and decentralized standard for social media. The goal is for Twitter to ultimately be a client of this standard. 🧵

Earlier, Dorsey did not rule out integrating the second-layer Lightning Network (LN) into Bluesky or Twitter. In autumn 2021, the social network created Twitter Crypto division. It was planned that the team would handle everything related to Web 3.0 and work closely with Bluesky.

In November Dorsey stepped down as Twitter CEO, but remained a member of the board until the end of his term at the shareholders’ meeting in 2022.

In December, the payments company Square changed its name to Block, to emphasise its commitment to blockchain.

His other project, Spiral (formerly Square Crypto), in the same month presented a toolkit for developing cryptocurrency wallets and other technical solutions based on LN.

In late 2021 Dorsey questioned the decentralisation of Web 3.0 due to the strong influence of venture capital.
