Jack Dorsey urged Bitcoin donations to those affected by Nigeria’s police brutality protests

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey urged users to donate Bitcoin to those affected by police brutality in Nigeria.

Dorsey added the hashtag #EndSARS to his post. The movement advocates against the brutality of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of the Nigerian police.

Since October 4, protests have swept the country, prompting President Muhammadu Buhari to disband the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

But SARS officers continue to operate in other police units. Human rights advocates and EndSARS supporters say the authorities’ measures are insufficient and continue to protest.

The campaign was backed by Paxful chief executive Ray Youssef. He said SARS targets users of digital assets. He called the situation in Nigeria a “human rights crisis”.

The movement was backed by local cryptocurrency exchange Busha. Its representatives urged other tech startups to contribute to the fight for Nigerians’ rights.

In October, Square, Jack Dorsey’s payments company bought approximately 4,709 BTC for $50 million. The investment in the leading cryptocurrency amounted to around 1% of the organisation’s total assets at the end of the second quarter of 2020.
