Bluesky — a decentralised alternative to Twitter backed by co-founder and former CEO of the social network Jack Dorsey — has landed in the iOS App Store. TechCrunch reports.
The app is available in beta testing by invitation only. According to the publication, since February 17 it has been downloaded about 2,000 times.
Dorsey announced the project of a decentralized social-media platform in 2019. In February 2022 appeared organization Bluesky PBLLC.
In April, after Twitter’s leadership decided to sell the social network to Elon Musk, the project reminded others of its independence.
In May, developers published the first part of the open-source code for the Authenticated Data eXperiment protocol. The Bluesky-built solution available in the store is based on its iteration named AT Protocol.
Journalists were invited to test the app. They said its interface closely resembles Twitter.
The profile displays name, followers, posts and replies. Features include likes, comments and reposts. The messenger allows posts up to 265 characters long, compared with Twitter’s 280.
TechCrunch noted that the Bluesky team regards the protocol as the main product, and that the app is meant to demonstrate its capabilities.
In July 2021, the DeFi platform Aave announced the creation of an Ethereum-based alternative to Twitter.
In February 2022, developers introduced Lens Protocol, designed to simplify the creation of social Web3 platforms.
