Jameson Lopp urges developers to experiment more with Bitcoin

Co-founder and CTO of Casa, Jameson Lopp, laid out arguments in favour of sidechains and urged more active experimentation with the first cryptocurrency to expand and improve its ecosystem. The report comes from The Block.

«I believe that second-layer solutions, as [Stacks co-founder Muneeb Ali] put it, are among the most important things that can arise in this ecosystem. Because that is how we truly bring permissionless innovations to life,» the developer said during his talk at Bitcoin Unleashed in London.

He noted the rationale for building new solutions on protocols related to but distinct from Bitcoin, so as not to continually modify the code of the first cryptocurrency.

Lopp mentioned existing sidechain projects such as Liquid Network from Blockstream and Rootstock. According to him, mass adoption of these protocols has stalled because they are based on the so-called federation. The latter serves as an intermediary between the main chain and one of its sidechains.

The developer also noted recently emerged solutions — drivechains, Spiderchain and BitVM. They, in particular, allow the mempool to be ‘unloaded’ and expand Bitcoin’s smart-contract capabilities.

«I want experiments to continue. And I think the only way forward is to keep building, endure failures, learn from mistakes and grow,» Lopp said.

Earlier, the Botanix Labs head Willem Shroe stated the case for integrating the Bitcoin blockchain with the Ethereum Virtual Machine.
