Japanese authorities confiscate NEM cryptocurrency stolen from Coincheck exchange

The Tokyo District Court ordered the confiscation of the NEM cryptocurrency stolen from the Coincheck exchange from one of the suspects in the investigation, who bought the coins after the hack, The Japan Times.

The court issued a restraining order against the assets that the defendant Takaesi Doi obtained.

Authorities say that, although Doi knew the coins’ provenance, this did not stop him from buying them on the dark web at a discounted price. He later moved the assets to several exchanges.

The assets are currently frozen. They will be transferred to the state after a final decision in the case.

Coincheck was hacked in 2018. Hackers stole more than $530 million in NEM cryptocurrency.

The investigation continues; the hackers remain at large.
