Keanu Reeves Calls Cryptocurrencies Astonishing Tools
Digital assets are remarkable tools for exchanging and distributing resources; criticism of them will only make them better. Keanu Reeves, star of The Matrix and other films, said this in an interview Wired.
According to the actor, shunning cryptocurrencies because of volatility would strengthen them “in terms of how they are protected”.
Reeves said he keeps an eye on technological developments, noting the emergence of AI-generated music in the style of Nirvana and digital art in the form of NFTs. He is concerned that this might be driven by a “corporatocracy that seeks to control them”.
The actor noted that his Neo in The Matrix fights for reality only so that someone asks him: “Who cares whether it’s real?”.
“In cultural and social terms, we will confront the value of the real versus the valueless. And what will be foisted upon us? What will be presented to us?” — he commented.
Recently, Reeves has been combining film shoots with advising the charity Futureverse Foundation in digital art. The Foundation funds artists wishing to enter the NFT space.
“I helped organise the launch. We’re trying to use the technology […] and give artists with different viewpoints a chance”, he explained.
In Meta’s initiative to create a metaverse, Reeves saw only “land for sale,” which nonetheless offers “a way to create wealth.”
“It’s all about the senses. It’s spectacle. And a system of control and manipulation. We are on our knees, looking at the walls of the cave and seeing projections. We have no option to look back or to the side,” the actor explained.
Back in 2021, Reeves stated that he is not a proponent of NFTs and metaverses created by corporations like Meta, but he holds “a little cryptocurrency”.
