Kenyan authorities to study Worldcoin’s activities
The Kenyan government has formed a committee to study the Worldcoin project. It will prepare a corresponding report for the House of Representatives, writes The Star.
Forty-two days have been allocated for the task.
The formation of the committee was prompted by Worldcoin representatives’ failure to comply with authorities’ orders to halt iris-scanning of users’ irises.
At the same time, a Kenyan court halted Worldcoin’s operations following a lawsuit by the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner. It ordered the company to preserve information collected from April 2022 to August 2023 until the conclusion of the court proceedings.
Earlier the Ministry of Internal Affairs temporarily restricted the startup’s local business. The media reported a raid on the project’s local warehouse.
Worldcoin has drawn the attention of regulators in other countries as well. Regulators in the United Kingdom, France, Germany and Argentina have expressed interest in whether the collection and storage of citizens’ personal information complies with applicable law.
Worldcoin’s Europe manager, Ricardo Masiera said, that the World ID identification system would become available to large organisations and world governments.
