KFC bot congratulates customers in Germany on Kristallnacht anniversary

The KFC fast-food chain sent customers in Germany a push notification urging them to \”indulge in crispy chicken\” on the anniversary of Kristallnacht. This is reported by The Verge.

\”Kristallnacht,\” or the \”Night of Broken Glass\” — a brutal, coordinated antisemitic attack by the Nazis that occurred on 9–10 November 1938. SA units and civilians destroyed thousands of Jewish businesses, homes, synagogues, shops and schools, killed more than 90 people and sent about 30,000 others to concentration camps.

Many consider it the start of the Holocaust.

On the eve of the 84th anniversary of the tragedy, customers received a promotional message from KFC:

\”This is the day of remembrance [\u201cNacht der Reichspogromnacht\u201d]! Treat yourself to a creamier cheese on the crispy chicken. Now in KFCheese!\”

Many customers expressed indignation.

\”Sorry, we made a mistake that caused our system to send an incorrect and unacceptable message through the app. We are very sorry and we will immediately review all internal processes [KFC] to ensure this does not happen again. Please accept our apologies for this error,\” the company said.

The company also said it paused data sharing between apps to study the system’s operation and prevent similar problems.

In August, Meta introduced Blenderbot 3 with 175 billion parameters. Less than a week after its release, the system was criticised for antisemitism and dissatisfaction with Facebook.
