Kosovo extends ban on Bitcoin mining

The government of the partially recognised state of Kosovo approved the introduction of emergency measures in the energy sector, relating in particular to cryptocurrency mining. This is reported by TASS, citing an official document.

From August 1, authorities extended the mining ban by 60 days and ordered all institutions in the country to switch to more economical use of electricity.

The decree was adopted in response to the sharp rise in the cost of imported energy and the ban on the export of fossil fuels from several EU countries.

Going forward, the government may extend the restrictions for a period of 30 to 180 days.

In December 2021, Kosovo authorities declared a state of emergency in an effort to cope with the energy crisis.

In early January 2022, cryptocurrency mining was banned, and law enforcement authorities were tasked with monitoring electricity consumption.

Earlier in the month, police, together with customs confiscated more than 300 bitcoin mining devices.
