Kremlin denies reports that Putin backs legalisation of mining in several regions

Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin’s press secretary, denied media reports about Vladimir Putin’s alleged support for proposals to allow mining in regions with an excess of electricity, according to RIA Novosti.

“No. Such proposals have not even been formulated yet,” he said.

Earlier Bloomberg, citing sources familiar with the situation, wrote that Putin advocated for the legalisation of cryptocurrency mining in Irkutsk Oblast, Krasnoyarsk Krai and Karelia.

During a meeting with the government, the Russian president stated that Russia has competitive advantages in mining — a surplus of electricity and a well-trained workforce, and he urged the cabinet and the Central Bank to come to a unified view on cryptocurrency regulation.

Previously the central bank proposed to ban the circulation of crypto assets and their mining on the territory of the Russian Federation.
