Kyrgyz authorities discuss blockchain-based voting system

Acting president and prime minister of Kyrgyzstan Sadyr Japarov proposed implementing a blockchain-based system for holding votes. He said in an interview with Al Jazeera.

In his view, distributed ledger technology could ensure fair elections in the country.

“We have had three revolutions because of unfair elections. If this continues, unrest and revolutions will continue. From now on, everything will be fair,” Japarov explained.

The acting president has already held consultations with the Central Election Commission. Specialists would need three to six months to create a blockchain system.

“This would help restore public trust in the democratic process,” the head of state added.

Earlier in October, after elections in Bishkek, mass protests by supporters of parties that failed to win seats in parliament occurred. When the rally was being dispersed, clashes with security forces began, protesters stormed the parliament building and the presidential administration of Kyrgyzstan.

Against the backdrop of ongoing mass protests in the country, the National Bank of Kyrgyzstan recommended commercial banks and non-bank financial institutions to suspend operations. The SWIFT cross-border payments system was also disabled.
