Kyrgyz president approves mining farm at Kambar-Ata-2 hydroelectric station

In Kyrgyzstan, mining devices will be placed at the Kambar-Ata-2 Hydroelectric Station with the approval of President Sadyr Japarov. He said this in an interview with the Kabar agency.

According to the head of state, the power plant generates 120 MW of electricity, of which only 90 MW are used for their intended purpose. Japarov stressed that the country has lost about 3.2 billion soms (~ ₽3.3 billion) in potential revenue due to unused capacity.

The development of the concept and its implementation at the hydroelectric station will be undertaken by a private investor, the president noted. Its cost was estimated at $20 million. The mining process will be automated and placed under state control.

When asked about tariffs for miners, Japarov said they operate at the ‘highest’ rates — 5.04 som per 1 kW. However, during the warm season energy consumption decreases, so operators of digital assets may conduct their activity on designated sites under more lenient conditions.

«If there is a shortage of electricity in the winter period, we will suspend the operation of such farms. The other nine months they can operate», — noted Japarov.

As reported in 2021, the Cabinet of Kyrgyzstan approved new electricity tariffs that envisage higher charges for mining activities.
