Larry David Regrets FTX Super Bowl Ad Participation
Actor and comedian Larry David expressed regret in an interview with the Associated Press over his decision to appear in an FTX advertisement for the Super Bowl in 2022.
“I asked my friends who were knowledgeable about these things: ‘Should I do this ad?’ They said: ‘Yes, it’s on the rise.’ And like an idiot, I did,” he recounted.
At that time, crypto companies showcased a record number of video promotions during the main sporting and television event in the US, held on February 13.
In the ad, David criticized various innovations throughout human history such as the wheel, fork, toilet, dishwasher, and concluded with FTX. His counterpart, demonstrating the platform’s mobile app, assured him it was a “safe and easy way to get into crypto.”
“I don’t think so, and I’m never wrong about these things. Never,” David’s character replied.
The ad concluded with the slogan: “Don’t be like Larry, don’t miss out.”
The advertisement cost $6.5 million for 30 seconds. The exchange’s commercial lasted 2.5 minutes.
In 2022, the crypto industry was shaken by a series of collapses and bankruptcies, the largest being the collapse of FTX in November. It was only in January 2024 that the company’s liquidators announced the potential repayment of all client and investor claims.
David expressed concern that he might still face lawsuits due to his participation in the bankrupt exchange’s advertisement.
Earlier in 2023, representatives of the crypto industry were notably absent from Super Bowl advertising.
