Latvian resident planned to murder cryptocurrency owners to obtain €500,000
The State Police of Latvia предотвратила the kidnapping and murder of two people, planned by the offender to obtain cryptocurrency from them worth about €500,000.
Information about the planned crime was obtained by authorities in September. They found that a resident of Riga was seeking kidnappers in the criminal underworld. The offender planned to force the victim to transfer the cryptocurrency held to the specified wallet and then kill.
During surveillance of the crime’s organizer, investigators established that he was already tailing the victim, monitoring the routes of movement and daily routine.
The offender had also prepared torture devices to be used if the victim refused to disclose the passwords to his cryptocurrency wallets.
Subsequently, police learned that another kidnapping and murder were planned under a similar scenario. As a result of two kidnappings, the organizer intended to obtain cryptocurrency worth €500,000.
He was arrested on 7 October as he waited for the victim with the aim of kidnapping. The suspect fully admitted his guilt.
He had previously been convicted, including for fraud.
The Riga resident was remanded in custody by court order for the duration of the investigation.
Earlier in April, a Moscow court began considering the case of four defendants charged with attempting to extort bitcoins from a Moscow-based entrepreneur.
