Marathon Digital and Brink to raise $1 million to support Bitcoin Core developers

Mining company Marathon Digital Holdings and nonprofit Brinkannounced the launch of a fundraising program to raise up to $1 million to support Bitcoin Core developers.

Brink is a fund that distributes grants and engages with sponsors. Brink was founded by Bitcoin developers John Newbery and Mike Schmidt.

Under the agreements, Marathon committed to matching all third-party donations on a dollar-for-dollar basis in 2023. During the Bitcoin 2023 conference from May 18 to 21, the ratio will be 2:1. In total, the company will allocate $500,000 for these purposes.

“We have historically focused on supporting Bitcoin by addinghashrate. Now the company is helping those who support the open-source protocol by contributing to Brink,” — said Marathon CEO Fred Thiel.

In July 2022, one of Bitcoin Core’s leading developers, Peter Velle requested an exemption from direct access to the Bitcoin Core software.

Nine months earlier, his colleague Jonas Schnelli left the project due to shifting priorities and “increased legal risks associated with writing code for Bitcoin”.
