Authorities in Massena, New York, have imposed a 90-day moratorium on launching new cryptocurrency mining facilities to attract tourists. This was announced by Mayor Steve O’Shonessi in a comment to WWNYTV.
“We do not want our city to be cluttered with trailers [carrying equipment] that mine Bitcoin. We just want to ensure that if they come here, they will build a presentable structure,” the city mayor said.
Massena attracted miners with cheap electricity from the local hydroelectric plant, Massena Electric.
“The key criteria for miners are cheap electricity and reliability. And we have always possessed these qualities,” said one of the leaders of Massena Electric, Andrew McMahon.
Earlier, residents of New York state accused the mining company Greenidge Generation of having a negative impact on the environment.
In Ohio, the bitcoin mining infrastructure provider Standard Power signed a five-year partnership with Energy Harbor to power a data centre with carbon-free electricity from its nuclear plant.
