The ceremony took place on 31 August 2020; construction work was scheduled to begin at the start of this year. Local residents say that it never started.

According to a KE International representative, which won the contract to build the \”cryptocity,\” the main investor is Kenyan entrepreneur Julius Mwale. More than $4 billion has been raised for the project.

KE International said that construction would begin in October after completing works on another Mwale-financed city in Kenya.
