Media: ARM will not sell its latest chips in China
ARM will not sell the Neoverse V chip series to the Chinese tech giant Alibaba because of export restrictions in the United States and Britain. The Financial Times reports this.
According to the report, the company believes that the new accelerator falls into the category of high-performance processors. Although ARM may apply for a license, it is likely to be denied.
Neoverse V is a series of high-performance processors designed for supercomputers, cloud computing and accelerating AI workloads. ARM does not manufacture chips itself, but sells its designs to companies such as TSMC and Samsung.
According to ARM, Neoverse V was designed in the United States, which limits its export to China under the rules.
According to the FT, the administration of U.S. President Joe Biden also намерена включить the Chinese chipmaker YMTC in the sanctions list in the coming week. It is reported that the company violated export-control conditions by supplying NAND memory chips to the Chinese smartphone maker Huawei.
Officials in the U.S. administration consider YMTC to be one of China’s leaders. It is expected that including the producer on the list will provoke a sharp reaction.
Meanwhile, China filed a complaint with the World Trade Organization over export controls.
Earlier reports said that Japan and the Netherlands joined the United States and Britain in tightening controls over equipment for semiconductor manufacturing in China.
In October, the U.S. governmentpublished a set of export-control measures, banning the export of advanced chips for supercomputers and artificial intelligence to China.
In September, the White House restricted the sale of Nvidia and AMD processors to Russia and the PRC.
In August, the U.S. Congress passed a bill, designed to spur chip manufacturing in the United States.
