Media: Chinese miners bypass Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 hash-rate limiter

A group of enthusiasts from the PRC released a modification of Nvidia’s desktop GeForce RTX 3060 that allows bypassing the company’s hash-rate restrictions.

The GeForce RTX 3060 chip is capable of delivering around 40-45 MH/s, but due to a limiter that determines the characteristic load for mining software, performance automatically drops to 20-25 MH/s.

In the photo published by the Twitter user under the handle I_Leak_VN, it is visible that the graphics card is mining Ethereum at a stable hash rate of 45 MH/s using the Dagger Hashimoto algorithm. When using an eight-card rig, total hardware power reaches 362.75 MH/s.

A group of Vietnamese miners on Facebook confirmed the graphics processor’s ability to overclock to 50 MH/s. This brings the GPU’s performance to the level of the GeForce RTX 3060 Ti at a lower price and power consumption.

At present, it remains unclear how exactly the loophole found by Chinese miners operates. No major source has yet confirmed the modification’s viability. Nvidia itself has stated that the protection cannot be cracked.

Earlier in February, Nvidia announced plans to halve the hash rate on the new desktop GeForce RTX 3060 cards. The mobile variants of the GPU were not affected.

Against this backdrop, miners from China, South Korea and Taiwan began massively buying gaming laptops based on these GPUs.
