The power plants are ordered by August 24, 2021 not only to disconnect cryptocurrency mining facilities from the grid but also to dismantle data centers located on their premises. They must report on compliance by August 25.
If enterprises fail to comply voluntarily, authorities will forcibly demolish the facilities. Law enforcement agencies will be mobilised to oversee the process.
According to data from the Cambridge Centre for Alternative Finance, in April 2021 the share of Yunnan miners in the Bitcoin hashrate generated in China was 8.72%.
In June the provincial authorities announced plans to restrict cryptocurrency mining. State authorities in the regions Qinghai, Xinjiang, Sichuan and Inner Mongolia also ordered mining enterprises to cease operations.
Earlier, the State Council of the PRC announced taking measures against the industry.
As reported in July, the State Grid Corporation of China sent notices to all provinces demanding a halt to cryptocurrency mining.
