The streaming service Netflix will ban cryptocurrency advertising in its new ad-supported plan. The report cites The Sydney Morning Herald, citing sources.

They said the restrictions would also apply to videos related to politics and gambling. People familiar with the matter added that the company is studying the possibility of banning advertising for pharmaceutical products.

In April, Netflix announced the launch of a low-cost plan with ads. Company representatives said the move was necessary to bolster revenue as the subscriber base shrank.

In July, the streaming service announced that the tier would launch in partnership with Microsoft. According to The New York Times, the initial plan was to present the new subscription version in early 2023, but the dates were allegedly moved to November 1, 2022. It will be available to viewers in a number of countries, including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany and France.

“We are still at the early stages of deciding how to launch a cheaper ad-supported version of the subscription, and no decisions have been made yet. At this stage this is only speculation,” said a representative of the service to the publication.

In June 2018, Google banned cryptocurrency advertising and related content. Later, it became possible to promote cryptocurrency exchange services in the US and Japan, but only by certified companies.

In summer 2021, the search giant lifted restrictions and allowed advertising for cryptocurrency exchange services and digital wallets for American users.

In the same year Meta changed its policy regarding the display of digital products toward greater transparency and consideration of business interests.

As noted in July 2022, the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, UNCTAD urged authorities in developing economies to restrict or ban cryptocurrency advertising.
