Media reports OpenAI plans to start producing AI chips

OpenAI is studying the possibility of manufacturing its own AI chips, Reuters reports, citing sources.

Since 2022, the company has been weighing several options to address the equipment shortage. Among the possibilities are closer cooperation with Nvidia, seeking new suppliers, and building its own chip.

According to sources, OpenAI has not yet made a final decision. Representatives of the company declined to comment.

Industry participants said that moving to in-house production would be a major strategic initiative and would require substantial investment. They estimated the investment at hundreds of millions of dollars a year.

Experts suggested that the chip-development process could accelerate the acquisition of a manufacturing company. One person familiar with OpenAI’s plans said the Sam Altman-led firm had studied a potential acquisition target, but Reuters could not determine its name.

In April, reports said that Microsoft is working on its own AI chips. According to journalists, this would help the company avoid dependence on Nvidia.

In September, WSJ sources reported talks between OpenAI and investors about a possible sale of shares and a valuation of $80-90 billion.
