Databases compiled from various sources are increasingly being sold on hacker forums.
According to Kommersant, over the past few days on the black market have been found databases of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Russian passports, and databases of residents’ passport data from Russian regions.
Experts say the data are most often gathered from old databases or generated using algorithms.
Experts attribute the rise in such databases to the growing number of platforms where they can be purchased — in addition to hacker forums, the databases are also distributed in Telegram channels.
Experts say that more data is publicly available as well.
Recently, a bill to prohibit the use of personal data without the owner’s consent was introduced in the State Duma.
Under the document, residents of Russia will also have the right to require operators to delete personal data. Operators must allow users to specify the list of publicly available data for each category listed in the consent and provide a list of resources where they plan to publish them.
