Meta begins testing monetisation in Horizon Worlds
The Meta corporation began testing monetisation in the Horizon Worlds metaverse. Some users will have the opportunity to sell virtual items.
Under a long-term strategy, in the future Meta’s virtual-reality users will, if they wish, be able to ‘earn a living’ by selling digital goods and services. In doing so they will create their own business models, becoming virtual entrepreneurs.
In addition to items, users will be able to sell ‘effects’ in their worlds:
“For example, someone will sell accessories that can be used in a separate ‘fashion world’, or offer paid access to a new part of their world,” Meta explained.
To incentivize participants in the United States experiment, the company will allocate $10 million from the Horizon Creators fund. They will be assigned targets, with cash bonuses paid upon achievement. These could include tasks to create worlds in which other users spend a certain amount of time, or using new features.
The company pledged to increase the number of monetisation tools available to users.
Meta is considering the possibility of creating centralized tokens for its own metaverse.
