The applications, among other things, cover:

  • crypto tokens;
  • blockchain software;
  • wallets, trading and exchanging virtual currencies.

«These documents reflect the company’s strategy to move into the metaverse. Clearly, Meta has serious plans for a virtual economy that will be the driver of this», — said Kondoudis.

Brands have recently become more active in seeking trademark protection in the digital world, The Block noted. For the first three months of 2022, the number of such applications exceeded those for all of 2021.

In February, the fast-food chain McDonald’s filed ten trademark applications for registration in the realm of virtual assets and metaverses. In March, the company’s rival Burger King followed suit, patent attorney Josh Gerben noted.

Burger King is cooking up some metaverse plans.

The company has filed a trademark application indicating it plans to offer \”virtual food items\” and \”virtual restaurants.\”@BurgerKing‘s trademark filing comes 42 days after @McDonalds made a similar filing.#burgerking #web3 pic.twitter.com/Q9yxcB1v53

Earlier, he noted that not all plans reflect real intentions to operate in the new space, but brands prefer to protect their intellectual property there to avoid potential disputes.

As a reminder, Nike, the athletic apparel and footwear maker, filed a lawsuit against online retailer StockX for unauthorized sale of sneaker images as NFTs.
