Meta says AI fears are ‘premature’.

Yann LeCun, Meta’s chief AI scientist, in an interview with the Financial Times, described concerns about existential risks linked to the technology as ‘premature’.

At the same time, the expert warned of negative trends in regulation being too early; in his view, this would strengthen the dominance of large technology firms and leave little room for competition.

“Regulation of AI research and development is incredibly counterproductive”, LeCun emphasised.

The idea that AI will kill humanity, he called ‘absurd’:

“The debates about existential risk are very premature until we have a system design that can rival even a cat in terms of learning capabilities, which we do not have at present.”

Earlier, one of the industry’s pioneers, Geoffrey Hinton warned the world about potential threats related to the technology. Previously, former Google CEO Eric Schmidt stated that AI poses an ‘existential risk’, due to which many people could ‘suffer or die’.

In June, the movie star and former California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger drew a parallel between real artificial intelligence and ‘Skynet’ from the film ‘Terminator’.

In April, U.S. President Joe Biden said that AI risks have not yet been studied. Meanwhile, the European Commission raised concerns about the technology’s impact on democracy.
