Meta to Develop 5 GW Data Center

Meta is constructing the Hyperion data center, which will provide the company’s new AI lab with a capacity of 5 GW. This was announced by the firm’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg.

The corporation is building clusters of several gigawatts. The first of these, Prometheus, will be launched in 2026. Hyperion will occupy an area comparable to much of Manhattan. The complex is likely to be built in Richland Parish, Louisiana.

The company plans to launch a 2 GW system by 2030 and then expand to 5 GW over several years.

Prometheus will receive 1 GW, making the complex the first AI center of such scale entirely controlled by one company. It will be located in New Albany, Ohio.

1 GW is 1 million kW, enough energy to power 800,000–900,000 homes in the United States.

“The Meta Superintelligence Labs will have the best computing power in the industry, certainly including per researcher. I look forward to working with the best experts to move forward!” Zuckerberg stated.

Previously, the company attracted leading specialists for the lab, including former Scale AI CEO Alexander Wang and former Safe Superintelligence CEO Daniel Gross. Meta’s focus is now on creating the powerful infrastructure needed to train advanced AI models.

In January, Donald Trump announced $500 billion in private sector investments in artificial intelligence infrastructure. To implement the initiative, OpenAI, Softbank, and Oracle created the joint venture Stargate.
