Miami mayor aims to allow salaries to be paid in Bitcoin

Plans to expand the use of Bitcoin in Miami include the possibility of paying city employees’ salaries in the leading cryptocurrency. This was announced by Mayor Francis Suarez in an interview with Forbes.

Jack Dorsey, the CEO of Twitter and Square, called the idea “smart”.

Among other proposals, Suarez listed the possibility of paying local taxes and fees in cryptocurrency and the conversion of part of the city treasury into Bitcoin.

Beyond city-level efforts, the mayor is pushing crypto-friendly laws at the state level. To this end, he reached out to the crypto bank Avanti Caitlin Long, and spoke with Florida CFO Jimmy Patronis about introducing to the state Legislature a bill that would establish Bitcoin rules in the Wyoming style.

“Miami and Francis Suarez are paving the way for governments and Bitcoin,” commented Gemini cofounder Tyler Winklevoss in an interview.

The Miami mayor is also considering funding his reelection campaign in the leading cryptocurrency and hopes to host a Bitcoin conference in the city.

Earlier, in January, Suarez created an initiative group to integrate the city into the cryptocurrency industry.
