Microsoft Halts Release of AI Feature Recall Amid Criticism
Microsoft has withdrawn its new AI-based feature Recall from a mass release.
In May, Microsoft introduced Copilot+ computers equipped with a special chip and Windows software designed for AI tasks. The key feature was Recall, which assists in locating hidden browser tabs, files, emails, or chats using prompts.
Recall logs user actions on the computer and analyses them with Microsoft algorithms to facilitate tasks such as sorting emails or finding files. Initially, the feature was to be released for all Copilot+ PCs on June 18, but it will instead be available only through the Windows Insider program.
“We are adjusting the Recall release process to first analyze the experience of Windows Insider users and ensure high standards of quality and security. After receiving feedback, we plan to make Recall available for all Copilot+ computers,” the company stated.
Security researchers criticized Recall, claiming that hackers could access data stored on users’ PCs. Microsoft representatives noted that data is encrypted using BitLocker technology and is not shared with other users on the same device. Additionally, the feature can be restricted or even completely disabled.
In May, the European Commission demanded that Microsoft provide information regarding the use of generative AI in Bing under threat of a fine.
Earlier, the company announced the Copilot system, which integrates Windows OS interfaces with artificial intelligence language models.
