Miner profits from an old GPU amid equipment shortages

A miner from Russia resold an old graphics card and earned an amount three times its initial cost. He рассказал in a blog on Overclockers.

A user under the handle Met74 bought an AMD Radeon RX 5700 graphics card at the end of 2019 for 20 000 rubles.

\n

“Excellent deal, bought it almost at the bottom of the market,” he said.

\n

Met74 had not previously been interested in cryptocurrency mining and only followed news about Bitcoin. But in 2021 GPUs rose sharply in price and a shortage of equipment emerged.

\n

“Last week I visited the online store Citilink and was simply stunned. The “budget” GTX 1660 now costs more than 40 000 rubles.”

The user also found the going price for his GPU model — price tags ranged from 50 000 to 70 000 rubles.

“Understanding the folly of the situation, I listed my card for 60 000 rubles. A buyer appeared after a couple of days. Given that the graphics card was under warranty, he didn’t check it much. Thus I resold the card for three times its price.”

The user added that he decided to sell the graphics card because he believes the cryptocurrency boom will not last long:

\n

“When millions of people come to the market who know nothing about this, expect trouble. I predict the bubble will burst by summer. Miners will frantically try to offload useless cards, trying to recover at least part of their money.”

\n

He expects price stabilization by autumn 2021 and does not rule out that in the future he may buy a new graphics card, for example, the RTX 3080.

Earlier ForkLog reported that miners from China built a farm from laptops, which is capable of bringing $77,000 in Ethereum per year.
