Mistral AI Unveils Code-Generating AI Model

Paris-based project Mistral AI has introduced Codestral, an artificial intelligence model designed for code generation.

The neural network has been trained on a dataset comprising over 80 programming languages, including popular ones like Python, Java, C, C++, and JavaScript, as well as less common ones such as Swift and Fortran.

“Codestral saves developers time and effort: it can perform coding functions, write tests, and complete any partial code […]. Interaction with Codestral can enhance a developer’s programming level and reduce the risk of errors,” the statement said.

Codestral boasts 22 billion parameters and surpasses competitors on several criteria.

The model is described as “open,” though there are caveats. The agreement prohibits its use in any commercial activity or “in the context of an organization’s business activities.”

In November 2023, the startup raised $385 million in a funding round led by Andreessen Horowitz and Lightspeed Ventures. The funds were intended for the development of open-source software and to create a competitor to American tech companies.

In February 2024, Microsoft announced a long-term partnership with Mistral AI. The investment amounted to $2.1 billion.

Earlier in March, startup CognitionAI unveiled the AI assistant Devin, capable of generating complex code for websites or games based on prompts.
