Monero community urges Elon Musk to accept XMR for Tesla payments

Supporters of the anonymous cryptocurrency Monero have proposed adding the XMR token as a payment option on Tesla’s website, alongside Bitcoin.

“The proposal would spur the Monero community to come together and raise funds to purchase three Tesla Model 3 cars and donate them to three worthy charitable organisations,” the message said.

According to the company’s website, the price of the new Model 3 is $35,000. The authors of the initiative estimated the maximum expenditure for a single car at $50,000.

Eleven users supported the proposal. It attracted 890 XMR (~$152,170 at the time of writing).

XMR holders aim to attract the attention of Tesla founder Elon Musk over 21 days starting February 9. If he does not respond, the funds raised will be returned to users.

What is Monero (XMR)?

According to the community, some Tesla enthusiasts will value the privacy-focused coin XMR.

“The effect of appearing at a party with a completely new Tesla will be somewhat diminished if your friends knew about the purchase from a transaction on the Bitcoin blockchain,” said project representatives.

Anonymous transactions have repeatedly drawn the attention of authorities. In October 2020, the IRS selected Chainalysis and Integra FEC to develop tools for tracking transactions on the Monero network.

In November, CipherTrace filed two patents for a technology that includes tools for tracing transaction flows in the Monero network.

As reported, Tesla invested $1.5 billion in Bitcoin and indicated that in the future it could integrate the first cryptocurrency as a means of payment for its products.
