New Digital Ruble Scam Alert Issued in Russia

Fraudsters are attempting to steal funds from Russians under the guise of converting them into digital rubles, reports the Telegram channel Lapsha Media.

They are sending messages purportedly from the Bank of Russia, claiming that cash and non-cash rubles have supposedly become obsolete. To avoid losing funds on their bank cards, victims are advised to immediately transfer their money to a special digital ruble account.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs urged citizens to remain vigilant and recommended trusting information only from official resources of the regulator and Russian banks.

Previously, the Central Bank dispelled myths about the digital ruble.

The law on the national digital currency came into effect on August 1, 2023.

In the same month, testing of the CBDC for individuals and businesses in Russia began with the participation of 13 banks. Later, the number of participants expanded to 30.

Russian citizens will be able to use the new payment method widely between 2025 and 2027.

In December, the State Duma passed a law providing for the integration of the digital ruble into the tax regulation and control system.
