Newly Appointed Cholpon-Ata RES Chief in Kyrgyzstan Found Running an Underground Mining Farm

The newly appointed head of the Cholpon-Ata RES in Kyrgyzstan installed cryptocurrency-mining equipment at home, connecting it to the power supply in a way that bypassed the meter. This was reported by Sputnik, citing the State Committee for National Security.

The farm was uncovered during a search. Theft was detected on a significant scale, though the amount of damage has not yet been disclosed.

The operator of the mining farm had held various posts at the RES for a long time, and on December 8 was due to assume the duties of chief.

“While working in the power system, the latter, despite the energy crisis triggered by the low-water cycle in the country, using his official position, engaged in electricity theft, thereby causing damage to energy security,” the State Committee said.

In November, the agency uncovered a large mining farm with 2,500 servers.
