6071 BTC Activates After Nine Years in Dormancy

On April 19, Whale Alert recorded activity from an address that had been dormant for more than nine years.

Initially the user sent a series of small transfers to one of the wallets, after which a large tranche of 6,071 BTC was moved, 3,999 BTC of which returned to the original wallet.

The transaction fee amounted to $11.26.

Subsequently the moved 2,071 BTC (over $59.8 million at the time) were split further among other addresses.

Update:

Telegram channel GFiSchannel suggested that the transactions may be linked to the original owner of Mt.Gox exchange and Ripple founder Jed McCaleb.

“Reviewing the original chain of movements showed two familiar wallet groups and led to the address 1McU, which, in our view and that of several blockchain analysts, belonged to McCaleb.”

In late summer to early autumn 2022, fromMt.Gox-linked addresses, an unknown party withdrew a total of 15,000 BTC.

GFiSchannel noted that none of these bitcoins have anything to do with the exchange’s assets, which will be distributed to clients as compensation.

The authors of the Telegram channel suggested that the withdrawn funds went to finance the space company Vast, the sole sponsor and owner of which Jed McCaleb has been since February 2023.

“The amount was transferred to multi-signature wallets, and judging by the characteristic “snippings” in the movement, one can assume that it was an OTC sale through the desk of some exchange,” they added.

As of writing, the balance of 2,064 BTC remains at this address.

In February, approximately 2.04 million DOGE that had been dormant for nine years moved.
