Abkhazia bans cryptocurrency mining until 1 June 2021

Abkhazia’s Deputy Prime Minister Kristina Ozgan said that all mining farms on the republic’s territory would be shut off by 1 June 2021. reports Sputnik Abkhazia.

The decision was announced on December 8 at a meeting with representatives of RUP ‘Chornomorenergo’, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the SGB of Abkhazia at the Ministry of Economy.

Mining farms must be shut off regardless of ownership:

“The leadership of the republic makes no priority in this matter for itself. The directive is to disconnect everyone, wherever they operate,” said Kristina Ozgan.

Also from December 20 to June 1, 2021, Abkhazia imposed a temporary restriction on the import of goods intended for cryptocurrency mining activities.

On November 23, the Abkhazian government recommended that the Cabinet of Ministers of the country ban mining until the Ingur Hydroelectric Plant is repaired.

Earlier in September, President Aslan Bzhania denied the government’s plans to ban mining, preferring regulation.

Due to the energy-intensive mining of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, Abkhazia has teetered on the brink of a crisis – the republic lacks electricity to meet rising demand from residents and the economy.
