Abkhazian police disconnect 3,783 ASIC miners
Over the course of the week, law enforcement in the Republic of Abkhazia uncovered 12 cryptocurrency mining farms and disconnected 3,783 mining devices from the grid, according to the press service of the local interior ministry.
The farms were located in abandoned premises, uninhabited buildings, two private gravel-processing enterprises, and on the territory of the Pitsunda bread factory of the state company “Abkhakhleb”.
The largest farm, with 1,538 devices, was located in the town of Ochamchira. The miners drew power from a district substation.
For each identified mining device, the police drew up an inspection report and issued a disconnection notice.
Earlier in December, the Cabinet of Ministers of Abkhazia banned cryptocurrency mining and restricted the import of equipment for its execution until 1 June 2021.
Due to the energy-intensive mining of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, Abkhazia found itself on the brink of a crisis — the republic is short of electricity to meet the growing needs of the population and the economy.
