London-based startup Sonantic разработал an artificial intelligence algorithm that imitates flirtatious speech patterns through new ‘non-verbal sounds’, including sighs, pauses and light laughter.
Engineers released a video featuring the face of a real actress, but her speech is entirely synthesized by the algorithm. In it, the voiceover delivers a monologue about love, and at the end confesses that she does not exist.
During the development of the flirtatious AI, the team identified tricks that make people sound more romantic, including slowing down to create tension, a light smile during conversation and maintaining a calm, steady tempo. According to them, this significantly increased the realism of the synthesized speech.
Sonantic also demonstrated the interface of the program used to generate the voice. In it, a user can adjust the pace of speech, regulate intonation, style and tempo, and add various sounds between words.
Voice synthesis from Sonantic is already used in Hollywood films and video games. They can express joy and sadness, and now flirting as well. In addition to flirtatiousness, the team developed shy and teasing ‘speech styles’.
In August 2021, Sonantic used AI to synthesize the voice of actor Val Kilmer, who had lost his voice to throat cancer.
In July a deepfake voiced the quotes of the late chef for a documentary.
