Since November 2022, the information portal CNET has used artificial intelligence nearly 75 times to write a series of articles on financial topics. The Byte reports this.
The articles appeared under the byline CNET Money Staff. Visiting the author page indicates that the material was created with the use of artificial intelligence. The biography also states that every article has been carefully checked and edited by the publication’s staff.
Internet marketer Gaël Breton drew attention to CNET’s AI materials. According to him, since November 2022 the site has published 73 such articles on topics like ‘Should you prematurely close a deposit for a better rate?’ or ‘What is Zelle and how does it work?’.

After the tweet was published, the portal edited the CNET Money Staff biography page, and also removed the word ‘Staff’ from numerous articles that were written with automation.
Today, journalists rarely rely on text generators to write materials. However outlets such as Associated Press and the Washington Post have used automation systems for various low-level copywriting tasks.
In particular, the Post used AI to write articles about high school football and the Rio 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil).
CNET’s approach differs markedly from its competitors. Apparently, the system used by the publication is capable of producing detailed explanatory posts on complex financial concepts.
But generally, when media outlets radically overhaul their newsrooms, they issue press releases and publicly announce the use of automated technologies. CNET staff did not make such statements.
Representatives of the publication did not comment on the situation.
In December 2022 Google opened the source code AI video-blurring model. The company says the tool could prove useful to journalists seeking enhanced guarantees of confidentiality.
