Amazon announces recruitment drive for developers for a digital-currency project
The Amazon Digital and Emerging Payments division has posted vacancies for developers and engineers for a new digital-currency payments product.
The payment solution will be launched in Mexico and will allow customers to convert cash into digital currency.
“Customers will be able to use the product for online purchases of goods and services, such as Prime Video,” the announcement said.
The first job posting dated October 2020, but it was recently updated.
Amazon ranks fourth by market capitalization among global companies. At present, the platform does not accept any cryptocurrency as a means of payment.
Earlier in August 2019, the online retailer posted a LinkedIn vacancy for a software developer who, among other things, was to work on “blockchain”. The company was later forced to remove the blockchain reference from the vacancy text amid media frenzy.
Amazon has long shown interest in researching cryptocurrency technologies. Previously the company patented a cryptographic system based on a Proof-of-Work algorithm, and also a solution for the streaming-data market that lets subscribers receive cryptocurrency transaction data in real time.
It also launched a “managed” platform for developing scalable blockchain networks and backed a business accelerator for entrepreneurs and startups in the field of DLT technologies.
