Amazon Commits $2.75 Billion to Anthropic in AI Investment

Amazon has announced a new investment of $2.75 billion in the AI startup Anthropic. This brings the tech giant’s total investment to $4 billion, fulfilling a promise made in September 2023.

According to a press release, the collaboration between the companies to implement generative AI for clients worldwide is just beginning. 

Under the partnership agreement, Anthropic will use Amazon Web Services (AWS) as its primary cloud provider, including for security research and the development of future foundational models. 

The AI startup will create, train, and deploy models using AWS Trainium and Inferentia chips. It has committed to providing clients worldwide with access to new generations of chatbots on Amazon Bedrock.

“We have been working with Anthropic for several years, helping organizations worldwide implement generative artificial intelligence. We believe this collaboration will further enhance our customers’ experience,” said Swami Sivasubramanian, Vice President of Data and AI at AWS.

According to Amazon representatives, international corporations across almost all industries are using Amazon Bedrock with Claude from Anthropic. These include: 

• Bridgewater Associates;
• Delta Air Lines;
• Pfizer;
• Siemens.

The partners, together with consulting firm Accenture, intend to join forces to assist clients in responsibly implementing and scaling generative AI solutions.

Earlier, Anthropic introduced the chatbot Claude 3, which was found to be the fastest and most powerful among competitors according to the company’s tests.

In January 2024, the Federal Trade Commission launched an investigation into Amazon, Microsoft, OpenAI, Anthropic, and Alphabet regarding “investments and partnerships” in the field of generative artificial intelligence.
