Apple, Google, and Microsoft will expand support for the passwordless login standard developed by the FIDO Alliance and the World Wide Web Consortium. The companies plan to strengthen the role of biometric authentication methods for users.

According to FIDO, existing authentication methods are vulnerable. Many users reuse the same password across multiple services, the alliance noted.
“This could lead to account takeovers, data breaches, and even theft of personal information,” the FIDO statement says.
Passwordless login will allow users:
- to automatically access login credentials for signing into FIDO on their devices, even on new ones, without needing to re-register each account;
- to use FIDO authentication on a mobile device to authorize an app or a website on a nearby device, regardless of browser and OS.
“Users will sign in by performing the same action they use to unlock their devices, such as fingerprint confirmation, facial recognition, or entering a PIN,” the press release says.
The alliance added that this method could prevent successful phishing attacks that lure passwords.
Apple, Google and Microsoft plan to roll out passwordless sign-in across their platforms during 2023.
Earlier, FIDO representatives said that at least 25% of users use biometric authentication methods in online services.
Back in June 2021, Apple presented the Passkeys technology for signing up on various sites without passwords.
