Art Wars collection sold as NFTs for nearly $7 million without the artists' knowledge

Artists who created Star Wars stormtrooper helmets as art objects are preparing to sue the organizer of an NFT project who sold the works as tokens without their knowledge. The Financial Times reports.

As part of the Art Wars initiative, artists have been creating various versions of the helmets since 2013. Among the participants are the renowned photographer David Bailey and sculptor Anish Kapoor.

The curator Ben Moore photographed some of them and put them up for sale as NFTs on the OpenSea platform. The collection consisted of 1,138 tokens.

Investors have already bought the NFTs for more than 1,600 ETH (over $6.8 million at the time of writing).

Moore does not deny creating the NFTs without the artists’ permission. He says he sent them emails with information about the collection.

OpenSea said it had received a notice of copyright infringement. The Art Wars NFT collection page on the platform is currently unavailable.

Around a dozen artists are preparing to file a lawsuit.

Earlier in October, an unknown organized the pre-sale of fake NFTs, issued on the Solana blockchain, and disappeared with users’ funds.
